You should always follow the manufactures recommended paint mixes, and spray pressure, the manufacture know more about their product then anybody else does, if you follow what they sat to the letter, your paint should look great.

What is Car Insurance and How Does it Work?

Car insurance is a policy that is purchased for cars to provide financial protection against physical damage or bodily injury from an accident or against liability that can occur from accidents. It is also known as auto insurance and can be purchased for private cars, trucks, public motor vehicles as well as motorcycles. Most car insurance will cover medical fees for the insured party, physical damage for insured vehicle, theft, fire and damages caused for third party insurance. Some insurance companies also offer to pay the cost to rent a vehicle if yours is damaged and the cost of towing the damaged vehicle to a repair facility.

Regulations on Insurance

Insurance policies vary in legal regulations in different areas, but for most places, it is compulsory to insure cars before using and getting them on the road as this is normally related to both the car and the driver. The most common known car insurances are: the compulsory third party insurance which mainly covers personal injury and liability, with it is also a comprehensive cover that covers damage to someone else, property, or the vehicle, as well as your own and a third party insurance that seeks to recover damage to other properties or vehicles, but not yours. In addition to this, are other car insurance companies like private car insurance, which is mainly for private cars and commercial car insurance, which is for trucks.

Variances in Insurance Policies

Usually, for most car insurance policies there are flexible contributions paid each time a car is repaired with charges billed to insurance policy and are referred as excess and payments are done directly to the accident repair when the owner collects the car. One of such excess contribution is the compulsory excess where minimum excess payments are given to the insurer and the voluntary excess which is an extra amount above the compulsory excess to be paid in the event of claim on policy.

Four Steps to Switching Car Insurance

Could you save hundreds of dollars by switching your car insurance? It is a question worth asking yourself at least once a year. By doing a little research now, you may be able to find a comparable insurance plan at a better rate with another company, and save money. But you have to make sure you take the appropriate steps to switch, because you don’t want to have a lapse in coverage.

Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president at the Insurance Information Institute in New York, suggests asking yourself if you’re happy with the cost, coverage and service of your current policy each time it comes up for renewal. “If the answer is ‘yes, yes and yes,’ then stay with them. But if you’re not sure, it’s a good opportunity to shop around,” she says.

Here are four key steps to take when it comes to switching car insurance:

1. Review your current driving situation.
Take note of your driving circumstances as well as the needs of other drivers in your household. Do you have a newer model car? Do you commute several miles each week to work? Do you have recent traffic tickets?

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), your potential new insurance company may ask you all of these questions as part of the underwriting process. You’ll also likely be asked about the number of drivers on the policy, your driver license information, and the insurance coverage and limits you’d like to purchase.

Take a look at your existing auto insurance policy. Knowing what you currently have will make it easier to create apples-to-apples comparisons with the rates you receive from different insurers. An easy way to do this is to study your current policy’s declarations page, says Vaughn Graham, president of Rich and Cartmill insurance company in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“The declarations page describes the insurance you have, including the amount of coverage as well as coverage limits, and the amount of your deductible,” he says. When you’re more informed about your current coverage, it can help you become a smarter shopper.

2. Shop around.
Once you’re familiar with your current policy, it’s time to look for alternatives. A good first call is to your current insurance agent or the insurance company itself (some insurers, such as Geico and Progressive don’t work with agents). Even if you’re not happy with your existing policy (if you think the premiums are too expensive, for example), ask if there are ways to lower your rate for the same amount of coverage, says Salvatore. You may be eligible to receive discounts you’re not getting.

Here’s a list of common insurance company discounts, according to the NAIC:

  • Having safety devices in the car, such as anti-theft features
  • Having a good driving record
  • Driving a low number of miles a year
  • Having multiple cars on the same policy
  • Being a student who gets good grades
  • Insuring both your home and car with the same provider

While you’re reviewing discounts, be aware that switching to a new provider could affect discounts you already have with other types of insurance. For example, if you’re already getting a homeowner’s and car-policy rate reduction from your current provider, and you then move your car insurance to a different company, you may lose the discount you receive for homeowner’s insurance. It may make more financial sense to stay where you are, or switch both policies to a new provider that will give you a rate reduction for both.

In addition to speaking to your current agent or insurance company about your options, you can look online to research potential companies and obtain quotes. It is also a good idea to get referrals from family members, colleagues and other people whom you trust, Salvatore says. If they have had to file a claim with the insurer, they could tell you in person about their customer service experience.

If you’re currently buying through an independent agent who represents multiple insurance companies, you have a few more options. “You can go to them and say ‘I’m happy working with you, but I’m not so happy with this carrier’ and explain why,” Salvatore says. “Ask if they can suggest another carrier.”

A good agent should be able to offer you customized choices to fit your needs, adds Graham. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution. We’re all a little different.”

3. Don’t skimp on coverage.
As you receive quotes, make sure the insurance coverage and deductibles mentioned are satisfactory. Just because a rate quote may be lower than what you’re currently paying, it doesn’t mean it’s a better deal if the coverage is lacking, Graham says. If you’re not sure how much coverage you need, discuss your needs with insurance company representatives, and ask for guidance.

For example, if you have significant assets, you may need more than just the state minimum for bodily injury liability insurance. The same is true for property damage coverage. The retail price for an average new vehicle could easily top $30,000, but in many states, the minimum property damage coverage required is only $25,000. If you were responsible for a loss and did not have enough insurance coverage, you’d likely be on the hook for the difference. “Many of those limits are often inadequate and not near enough to meet today’s exposures to price of vehicles,” Graham says.

Though it’s important to have ample liability coverage, if you drive an older model vehicle that is paid for, you may choose to opt out of some optional types of coverage, such as collision and comprehensive insurance, in order to keep premiums low.

Collision insurance pays for the physical damage your vehicle receives if it collides with another object, such as a tree or another car. Comprehensive insurance pays for damage to your car from causes other than a collision. This could include vandalism, broken glass, fire and theft. If this coverage is more than your vehicle is worth, you could skip it to lower your rates. Just understand that you would then be paying for these losses out of your own funds if such damage did occur. People who live in areas prone to suchnatural disasters as floods, high winds and earthquakes might want to think about retaining their comprehensive coverage, experts say.

Another way to get a lower premium is to ask for a higher deductible. If you are willing to pay $1,000 out of pocket for a claim instead of $250, you could lower your rates. But make sure you can afford the higher deductible in the event that you suffer an insurable loss.

4. Notify your old and new providers.
After conducting all your research (and with a bit of luck), you may well find a company that offers good coverage at a lower rate. You may be willing to switch, but before you sign a new agreement, call yourstate’s department of insurance to learn if the company is permitted to do business in your state. You can also check out business-rating companies A.M. Best and Standard & Poor’s to check out the company’s financial stability. (Standard & Poor’s requires free registration before you can see company ratings.) It’s worth the extra time to spend before you agree to pay hundreds of dollars on a new policy.

Once you’ve verified that the new provider can do business in your state and appears financially stable, it’s time to make the switch. “When you are ready to cancel your current policy, let all parties know in writing, so that there is no gap in coverage,” Salvatore says.

If you end your existing auto insurance policy before it expires, you may receive a partial premium refund, depending on the terms of your agreement. However, you should continue paying for your old policy until the new coverage is confirmed in writing. Otherwise, the old policy could be dropped for non-payment before the new policy starts. And in most states, driving without proper car insurance coverage is against the law. “It may be easier to wait and have your new policy start when the old one expires,” Salvatore says.

Make it a priority to review your insurance policies on a regular basis. Household driving situations change often, and so do state laws that could affect the price of your premiums. By taking some time each year to do some car insurance research, you can make better decisions and pay the best possible prices for the best amounts of car insurance coverage.

How to modify your Maruti Swift with cool accessories

Maruti Swift is undoubtedly a great car in terms of performance. But as you might have already found out, it focuses more on performance then on design. Of course, the car’s design is sleek and simple, without looking in any way bad. It’s just that it doesn’t particularly sparkle through its design. The good part, on the other hand, is that due to the simple design, the car can be easily modified by adding accessories. Think of it like it’s a blank canvas- the simpler the merrier.

As long as you get a very good performance and fuel economy, the looks are less important, especially if you can modify these afterwards just by adding some cool accessories.

So, if you own a Maruti Swift or you plan on purchasing one let’s see what are the products that can change the way in which your car looks in no time.

Side note: if you’re on a budget, stay away from repainting plans and generally anything that involves taking your car to a car service center. Focus on accessories that you can mount yourself or that request a very little effort (and cost) to be mounted in a car service center.

Led lights

If you don’t particularly enjoy the bulb lighting that comes with your car, you can always modify that with very little effort.

The best solution is replacing the fabric lights with Cheap Car LED lights. Not only do the LED lights have practical benefits such as a reduced power consumption and longer resistance, but they can also give your car a very stylish look.

Something so small as LED lights can make such a huge difference when it comes to your Maruti Swift’s looks.

You can purchase LED lights from newfrog.com starting with $2.

Seat covers

The seat covers can make a real design difference. Depending on what kind of seat covers you choose, you can change your car’s look completely, giving it a new feeling.

When choosing seat covers make sure you take into consideration the practical aspects as well. For example, if you live into a very warm climate, it is not advisable to purchase a leather seat covers set, as these will heat up in the sun. Instead, you can opt for towel seat covers, which can look just as stylish as the leather ones.

Car mats

A slightly more subtle car accessory, the car mats can still be a great plus to your Maruti Swift’s look. Make sure you choose some solid car mats, as besides the aesthetic purpose, the car mats really have to protect your car’s interior. Having car mats can seriously prevent damage and will totally keep your car clean and in a good shape for longer.

Side beading

Exterior accessories can make a real difference to the overall car’s look. Side beadings can add a plus of coolness to your Maruti Swift. Keep in mind that small details make the difference.

While these side beadings have a clear design purpose, their original purpose is very practical. Owning side beadings will protect your car for future scratches- it always happens that you accidentally hit your car’s door to another object and you get it scratched. But the side beadings will act like a protective layer between the car door and the harmful object.

Bumper Protector

Just like the side beading, the bumper protector’s purpose is to protect your car from scratches, only that the latest will prevent the scratches resulted from parking.

As well, these little pieces of rubber can bring a plus of stylish design to your Maruti Swift.

Mud Flaps

The last one from the car protector series is the Mud Flaps. These attach to your car right near the tire, preventing mud to pile up under your car.

Usually these are made out of plastic, but you might find some made out of metal as well. Besides its very practical purpose, these can as well help improving the design of your car. Make sure you look thoroughly before purchasing a set of Mud Flaps, as you could actually find some really stylish ones.

Clear Fog Light Lamp

While all the other cool car accessories listed here are simply to mount yourself, the clear fog light lamp request professional installation- therefore you’ll have to take your Maruti Swift to the car service.

Double lamps might make your car look badass but let’s not forget the tremendous importance of the fog light lamps. These can be very helpful in bad weather conditions, making driving in these situations a lot mot safer.

Stickers

Purposed purely for improving the car’s design, stickers can make your Maruti Swift look really unique. Using stickers you can obtain the same effects such as from getting your car professionally painted at the service. You can choose from a large variety of stickers, starting with simple, 2D stickers, 3D stickers, small, delicate ones or large, aggressive ones.

How to Get More Miles Out of Your Gallon of Gas

Whether the price of gas is going up or down, it is still important to learn how to increase gas mileage on your car and save money from it. Other car owners are not only concerned with the price but also with its impact on the environment so they want to improve their car’s mph.

Regardless of your reasons on increasing your car’s gas mileage, here are the important tips that you can use to achieve it:

  1. Proper inflation of tires

Check your car’s tires on a regular basis. Make sure that they are inflated based on the recommendations of the manufacturer. Do not underinflate or overinflate. If your tires have low pressure, it will cause high rolling resistance, which will eat up your car’s fuel efficiency. Always maintain your tires with low rolling resistance by maintaining its recommended pressure because it will lessen the load of your car’s engine.

  1. Check air filter

Your car’s air filter plays a very important part in maintaining and protecting your car’s engine from dirt so you better check and change it if needed. If your air filter is congested with the dusts and dirt, it will be harder for your engine to suck air through the filter. If this happens, your engine will use up more petrol to cope up with the decrease in airflow. You can change your air filter once a year.

  1. Reduce your car’s weight

The weight of your car greatly affects its fuel efficiency and gas mileage. Put away all the useless things you keep in your car and keep only those that you need on the road. If you are confident with your tires and you will not go on a long drive, you can leave the jack and your spare tire. You can also remove the seats that you don’t use (if they are removable). If your car is lighter, your engine will use less energy, thus, less petrol consumption.

  1. Slower driving and less braking

Driving slower, around 65 mph or lower, will give you better mpg. There is a higher usage of engine power if you exceed 65 mph and this results to increased use of petrol. Moderation in your speed will also help you prevent strong brakes. Sudden and strong brakes take more energy and it will consume more petrol.

These are just few tips in improving your mph. There are more advanced tips that you can do with the help of an expert but these tips are the simplest and easiest that you can follow by yourself. Keep safe, always!

3 Helpful Tips for Traveling in Large Groups

You’re no stranger to group travel. Embarking on fun-filled vacations with scores of friends and family members is your favorite way to spend time off. As the adage goes, “The more, the merrier.” However, traveling in large groups comes with its share of disadvantages – disagreements over places to visit, where to eat and suitable lodgings, to name a few. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to stop potential arguments in their tracks. To ensure that your next group vacation goes off without a hitch, put the following tips into practice.

Invest in a Motor Home

If road trips are your preferred method of travel, a fully-loaded motor home is a worthwhile investment – particularly if you frequently travel in large groups. Cramming an enormous travel party into a standard-sized car or van is a surefire recipe for disaster. As experienced road warriors can confirm, tempers flare when space constraints are abundant. Since a motor home provides your travel companions with a mobile apartment in which to cook, watch television, stretch their legs and answer the call of nature, you can rest assured that squabbles and temper tantrums will be minimal. To find unbeatable deals on motor homes in Florida, get in touch with the Ocean Grove RV Supercenter.

Don’t be Afraid to Separate

It stands to reason that not every member of your travel party is going to have the same tastes and sensibilities. That being the case, there’s no reason to force them to do things in which they have no interest. The same is true for you. If the majority of the group is dead-set on doing something or visiting a locale you’re not particularly interested in, why should you waste your precious vacation time? Instead of functioning as a hive mind, your travel party should be free to head off in different directions should the need arise. This ensures that each member of your party is able to spend his or her time as they see fit.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead will serve you well in many endeavors, and group travel is no exception. Before the trip is underway, sit down with your travel party and do your best to work out a viable itinerary. This way, everyone will be on the same page from the outset – and no one will be taken by surprise by an activity they didn’t sign on for.

Traveling with a large group can be equal parts enjoyable and aggravating. Luckily, as long as the proper precautions are taken, trip-ruining disagreements should be few and far between. The next time you hit the road with a group of your nearest and dearest, consider investing in a motor home and remember the importance of good planning and respecting boundaries.

Should You Get a Motorhome or a Fifth Wheeler?

Anyone who’s got an affinity for the open road and taking life on an extended road trip will need an RV to do so to make it comfortable. But the debate about whether a motorhome or a fifth wheeler will do the job better has been an ongoing discussion among avid RVers for a long time.

Both sides of the argument make a great case, which can make the decision about whether to go with a motorhome or fifth wheeler even more challenging for those who are on the fence about the issue.

Fifth Wheeler Pros

Fifth wheelers definitely have their advantages. The following are just a few:

They’re compact while opening up to expansive features. While a fifth wheeler may look smaller, many of them can open up to as much as 400 square feet with all their sliders, such as those that can be found at spokanevalleyrv.com/. They offer all the amenities of a larger motorhome, including a kitchen, living area and computer area.

All space is usable. Since there is no engine, transmission or cockpit in a fifth wheeler, all of the space is totally useable.

More affordable. The total cost of a fifth wheeler is typically a lot less than a motorhome. Insurance also tends to be less expensive.

Motorhomes Pros

There are plenty of advantages that come along with a motorhome as well, including the following:

Everything is accessible in one area. One of the biggest advantages of a motorhome is that you can access all the amenities then return to the cockpit, all without having to step foot outside.

Tons of storage capacity. Since the majority of modern motorhomes are built on durable truck chassis’s, storage in the basement tends to be very expansive. This frame also permits the vehicle to be towed should it ever need to be.

Easy maneuvering. Despite the large size of motorhomes, they are surprisingly easy to maneuver. That’s because the driver sits directly on top of the front wheels, with the 50-degree wheel cut making it simple to back up.

Levelling jacks.Whether manual or automatic, the levelling jacks in a motorhome can be deployed from the driver’s seat without having to get out to do it. This is especially helpful when it’s raining, or at night for safety reasons.

Clearly both fifth wheelers and motorhomes have their own set of advantages. It all comes down to what’s most suitable for one family over another, and what the RV will be used for – full-time RVing or the odd weekend getaway.

Automobile Industry and the Recession

Automobile industry has a special impact on the daily life of the modern day man, which requires fast mobility with reliability. The rapid growth in automobile industry has had its ebbs and flows. Currently it is undergoing a recession globally. The auto industry is evolving new strategies and signing up new contracts and joint ventures in an effort to stabilize itself and avoid further slump. There is a particular need for rationalization of taxation and customs policies in order to support enterprises producing automobile components. Automobile and automotive parts & components manufacturers make the major portion of the automotive industry throughout the world. Automobile manufacturing sector consists of truck manufacturers, motor vehicle body manufacturers, motor vehicle parts and supplies manufacturers. This is engaged in manufacturing of automotives and light duty motor vehicles, personal utility transport vehicles and chassis, cabs, trucks, automobile and utility trailers, buses, military small and heavy vehicles and the main parts of the motor vehicle engines.

In 1997, the majority of automobile construction enterprises have passed through the lowest critical point and began to increase production volume, restructuring themselves while taking into account consumer requirements, their solvency, and the overall economic situation. Thus, in the first six months of 1997 there was a substantial increase in the volume of production compared to the corresponding period in 1996.

The global automotive industry is highly diversified and includes different sectors like manufacturers, suppliers, dealers, retailers, original equipment manufacturers, automotive engineers, spray painters, motor mechanics, auto electricians, aftermarket parts manufacturers, body repairers, fuel producers, environmental and transport safety groups and even many of trade unions. The global leaders in auto industry are United States, Japan, China, Germany and South Korea. The United States of America is the world’s largest producer and consumer of motor vehicles and automobiles accounting to almost 6.6 million direct and indirect-jobs. Automobile industry is one of the significant ones in the world that provides employment to 25 million people across the globe.

This industry is largely dominated by the five giant automobile manufacturing corporations namely Toyota, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen AG and Daimler Chrysler. These corporations have their presence in almost every country of the world and they continue to invest into production facilities in emerging markets namely Latin America, Middle East, Eastern Europe, China, Malaysia and other markets in Southeast Asia. To overcome certain production costs many mainstream auto corporations have established there units worldwide.

Engine parts form one of the largest segments of the automotive components industry. The latest trend in this sector is of outsourcing a part of the engine to different vendors who provide good comparative technological expertise as well. Recently auto industry is going through its worst periods. The global giants are facing the toughest economical crisis. This is also resulting in heavy losses to the work force in the form of lost jobs. There are varied factors behind this decline of automobiles industry that have badly affected it as a whole. Nonetheless, it is hoped that this industry, which is an integral part of the modern day life and has stood the test of time in previous recessions, has the tenacity and the resilience of bouncing back once again.

Mobility Scooters hits the International automotive Industry

Constant Development in the transportation industry and automation sector in the contemporary world has resulted in numerous technological advancements and improvements in the human lifestyle in many phases. Ever since the beginning of the modern digital world there has been many major breakthroughs in the world of science and technology that has resulted in the existing development sustaining and improving the world to be a better and much more convenient place for human beings.

Introduction to an engine based scooter in the past made its way to admire and innovate the next generation electric powered mobility scooters that made quite an impact on society and has been in a constant rising trend among the common mass especially in the developed countries like Japan and China where there are severe traffic problems, people prefer to opt for such small transport option that provides cheaper cost and maintenance along with efficient transport time as compared to the traditional motorbikes and cars. This type of scooters are becoming the newest and perhaps also the cheapest way of transport in the current world.

What is a Mobility Scooter?

A mobility scooter is basically a modern type of a transportation device developed in the shape of a scooter. It is mostly considered as a type of an electric scooter powered by batteries and is usually used for the mobility impaired or the old aged people with cardiovascular problems. A mobility scooter has many different types including the 3wheel and the 4 wheel scooters in common these days. It also has a flat bottom area of a plate on the bottom to provide space for keeping the feet and handle bars in the top front to provide the steering and controlling for the scooter.

3 wheel Mobility Scooter:

The 3 wheel mobility scooter is basically based on the concept of a tricycle with two wheels in the back and one wheel in the middle front to maintain the balance of the scooter. This form of mobility scooter didn’t gain much popularity due to its risk of break down and safety issues due to its less balance and more concerns about the its destabilization while riding. 2 wheel mobility scooters are considered a much cheaper scooter than the 4 wheel scooter due to its less demand whereas many other features like night lamps and speedometer have also been introduced in this type to make it more popular.

4 wheel Mobility Scooter:

This form of mobility scooter remains the most popular form of scooter among the common mass up to date due to its large and diversified range of models being manufactured along with a lot less safety concerns of destabilization as compared to the 3 wheel mobility scooter. Over the recent years, many developments have been introduced in this type of scooter such as new and improved battery power with a better steering control system along with night lamps for better vision along with better brakes and emergency brakes. A five wheeled mobility scooter was also introduced but it didn’t become so popular as the traditional 4 wheel in the contemporary world.

What are the different types of Auto Paint?

Automotive paint has changed dramatically since the late 1800’s.  We paint our cars, motorhomes, and motorbikes to protect the material that it is made from.

Rain and chemicals in the atmosphere can cause materials such as steel, and aluminium to corrode (rust), in order to slow this process down we give the product a coat of paint.

The four basic types of paint available today are acrylic lacquer, acrylic enamel, acrylic urethane, and water based.  We will drop the word acrylic, and just refer to them as lacquers, enamels, urethanes and water based.

Lacquer based automotive paint was popular between the mid 1920’s and 1960’s and is still available today, although it has become illegal in certain areas because of the amount of thinning agent required that may cause harm to the environment.  This type of paint was commonly referred to as cellulose paint.  It was used as it gave a high gloss shine straight from the spray gun, was easy to apply by inexperienced painters, and was available in aerosol spray cans.  The downfall was it was a soft paint which easily chipped, and wasn’t very resilient to chemicals and UV light (the sun).  It also soon became of a dull appearance, making it a short lived paint job.

Enamel paints dry to a hard shell, making them tougher than lacquer paints.  These are often baked on or in an oven to speed up the drying time; they are a lot harder to paint with, therefore requiring a greater skill level.  Once again, some enamel paints are available in aerosol cans. The ones which we call flat colours are already mixed with a clear coat, and are known as a single stage system, while other colours known as metallic require a separate clear coat; these are known as two stage systems.   The single stage system was often used on commercial vehicles in place of cellulose paint, helping the vehicle to look newer for longer.

Urethane paints are newer than enamels and more expensive, they are easier to apply much the same as the lacquer paints (cellulose), but are as tough as enamels.  This automotive paint requires three products, the colour, a reducer to thin the colour to the right viscosity for the spray gun and a catalyst used to accelerate the drying time.  Once the paint is mixed it needs to be used quickly, any unused paint must be thrown away.  Urethane automotive paint is toxic and you require a respirator when applying it.

Like enamel paint urethanes can be used alone or as multi stage paint.  As a rule of thumb, single flat colours are single stage, while metallic paints are two stage, often referred to as two pack paints.  The second stage is the application of a clear coat which gives an easy to paint, minimum work, and optimum results, which with a little care can look good for years.  Urethane clear coat is also purchased in three products, the clear coat, the reducer (thinner), and a catalyst (hardener).

Technology has brought us the newest form of automotive paint which is the water based paints.  These paints are the most versatile of all, are able to be applied to metal, primer or an existing paint job.  This paint is slightly different in the fact that urethane paint is mixed with a reducer, (thinner) which evaporates to dry the paint, so applying heat can speed up the operation.  Water based paints require a flow of air to best dry them, a bit like hanging out the washing on a windy day.  This induction of air takes some getting used to, as too much air makes the paint run, and too little takes an age to dry.

Nowadays a lot of high end makers of cars use water based paint such as BMW, but the downfall is that you still require a clear urethane coat to finish the process.

Out of all of the paints discussed in this article enamels is the preferred product for the American Motorhome (RV) up until just recently.   As late as 2004 when the fully painted bodies were preferred, was when urethane paint was used.  This process took a few years for the RV industry to get right.

The main failing was the last clear coat that was applied too sparingly gave a matt finish, or too much which gave an orange seal finish.  As time has passed, one of the finishes has been greatly improved, although one of the main problems that happened was the flaking of paint from the aluminium panelled vehicles.

Aluminium panels require a different primer called etch, this has an acid base which helps to adhere itself to the panel.  Normal primer does not have the ability to stick to aluminium’s, so once this bond fails it takes with it the coloured coat and the clear coat, leaving the bare aluminium.   As this failing of the primer takes place you can often see bubbles appearing.

Drop Coating Metallic Auto Body Paint

Drop coating is an important skill that every auto body paint sprayer should aspire to master. Drop coats are administered during the last phase of the spraying process when metallic paints are used. When applied to an auto body panel correctly, drop coats offer full color coverage, perfect metallic content distribution and a better paint base that can accept lacquers with ease.

Applying Metallic Paint

Drop coating should be used with all metallic auto paints. Many paint sprayers apply metallic base coats using the same methods with which they apply solid colors, and this is a common error that compromises an otherwise perfect job. While horizontal arm movements are perfect for most solid color spray jobs, metallic auto body paint should be dropped onto the panel as soon as basic coverage has been achieved, and it is equally as important to cross coat the final application in horizontal and vertical directions.

Ensuring Uniform Paint Coverage

Before drop coats can be applied, the prepared car panel must be adequately covered with metallic auto body paint to help avoid primer transparency. Once the color is activated, a full wet coat of paint should be sprayed to the surface of the panel. It is essential that each horizontal spraying movement blends into the previous one to guarantee uniform coverage and distribution (overlaps of 30% to 40% are perfect). As soon as a single we coat has been applied, the auto body paint must be left to dry for around 10 minutes. Never spray a second coat until the first one has achieved a matte appearance.

Applying a Second Coat of Metallic Paint

Personally, I like to spray the next coat of paint in a different direction to the first, especially when the panel has been taken off the car. Sometimes, this isn’t possible on vertical panels, such as fenders and doors, if they are still fitted to the vehicle so don’t be too concerned if you are happier using a typical horizontal spraying pattern. The second application must be sprayed in a similar manner to the first coat, but try to achieve 80% wetness in comparison to the earlier application. Once more, the auto body paint must be left to dry for around 10 minutes until matte.

Applying the Drop Coat

If the metallic paint is still transparent, an additional coat may be required but this won’t be necessary in most cases. To spray the actual drop coat, position the spray gun 18 to 24 inches away from the surface of the panel and reduce gun pressure by 20% to 30%. Spray the auto body paint horizontally, moving the arm slowly across the panel so the metallic color drops (or falls) onto the surface. Maintain uniform coverage until the spraying process is complete. Recoat the panel from a similar distance straight away, but swap the horizontal movements for a vertical direction so the subsequent coat crosses the first. As well as guaranteeing even paint coverage, crossing the drop coat offers uniform metal distribution and a superior surface that will accept lacquer correctly.

Tacking the Drop Coat

Allow the drop coat to dry before visually inspecting the metallic auto body paint. Check for patches where coverage might be inconsistent and spray a further drop coat if necessary. With solvent-based auto body paint, it is always a good idea to run a tack rag over the vehicle panel as soon as the drop coat has dried. Specialist tack rags can be purchased for water-based auto body paint, but it is preferable to waive the tacking process as high paint build-up can peel back the color and this can lead to frustrating rework.

How To Choose Custom Car Paint: Urethane vs. Acrylic Automotive Paint

There are many factors to consider when choosing the best automotive paint for your everyday vehicle or classic car restoration project.  To most car collectors, the look and color of a car paint is the most important factor.  Other things to keep in mind include cost, application difficulty level, length of drying time, possible health hazards, and base-coat and finishing options.  For simplicity’s sake, I’ll narrow them down to the top four most important differences:  cost, difficulty level, durability and purpose. Acrylic and urethane are two of the most common automotive paints, yet they have very important distinctions.  This article will help you choose the right car paint for your car project.

Cost

Cost is the only practical area in which acrylic enamel car paint has the clear advantage over urethane car paint, which costs more than twice as much. Acrylic lacquer paints cost up to $250 a gallon, and  acrylic enamel costs only $100-$150 per gallon.

Difficulty Level

Application: If properly cut and polished, the finished appearance of acrylic car paint is unbeatable.  Urethane paint will give your car a “fresh look,” and is easier to apply than acrylic enamel, which can only be applied with high-pressure spray guns.  Urethane car paint can be applied with low-pressure, high-volume spray guns, which are easier to control and spray larger drops for better surface coverage, but are more prone to runs.  Acrylic enamel automotive paint does not completely cover the primer, thus the primer color matters more when using it.  On the other han, urethane paint covers the primer completely, so it does not require a similarly tinted primer.  Acrylic paints can be done in a home garage, and applied in a slightly cooler ambient temperature, but no colder than 18`C (65`F).

Drying Time: Acrylic car paint has a much longer drying time, 1-2 days, as opposed to the short 2-3 hours required for most urethane paints, cutting down on time between coat applications accumulation of dust. For urethane car paint, most follow a base-coat with a clear coat.  NOTE: some clear coats tint the color, especially if it is black or white.  In this instance, one may prefer to use a single-stage urethane, and forgo the clear coat for the sake of the color.  With urethane paint, wet-sand is also an option before applying a clear coat.  Acrylic car paints require more coats (6-8), and must always be cut and polished, after letting it harden for several weeks. Single pack acrylic primers and fillers tend to shrink and sink back on repairs, so only use them on a final, even prime coat, and give it as long as possible to harden before wet sanding.   Both acetone, thinners and fuel spillage damage acrylic paints, and they require more maintenance to keep your car finish shiny.  In contrast, if a urethane paint job goes well, it needs no buffing, and un-buffed paint is the longest lasting and easiest to keep clean.  If it is baked on, the car can be assembled the next day.

CAUTION: Urethane paints are toxic, as they contain isocyanate, airborne compounds that enter the body through the lungs and skin.  Always use safety gear (goggles, mask and gloves) and proper ventilation when working with urethane paint.  Acrylic automotive paints are less toxic because they are water-based, so the resin adheres using water as its primary agent, whereas urethane depends on a solvent.

Durability

Urethane finishes are much more durable than acrylic enamel finishes. There are many factors that vary the exact length of time a finish lasts, but urethane finishes, when properly maintained, generally last 5-10 years longer than acrylic enamel finishes. Urethane paints are activated by hardeners, so after they are mixed, they must be used promptly or the product is wasted.  Acrylic enamel paint is prone to more chipping, cracking and general wear and tear, since it does not feature the hardeners.

Purpose

Acrylic enamel car paint is typically used by professional car restorers who want to paint a classic car to exactly the original specifications, which requires acrylic enamel paint on many antique cars.  For example, acrylic enamel automotive paint is better for replicating factory orange-peel paint jobs, a bumpy surface finish.  Both auto manufacturers and car restoration professionals have now switched to urethane paint for most auto body work, due to it’s practical advantages over acrylic enamel.  It has become the standard in the auto industry because urethane car paint provides a quicker and better looking finish.

Automotive Paint Colors: What Affects Color Match?

Automotive Paint Colors: What affects color match?

In this article I will be discussing the main factors of why color match is such a difficult task. I believe if you can grasp a little bit about what auto paint colors are made of and how their application shifts color, then you could understand what causes color to change and what you need to do to match them.

There are three basic ingredients in automotive paint:

  • Resin
  • Pigment
  • Solvent

The resin is the component that holds together the pigment in suspension, provides adhesion to the surface applied, and determines the quality and paint durability.

The pigment comes in a powder form similar to concrete, and the average aftermarket automotive paint mixing system includes about 100 colors or toners to be able to mix formulas including metallic and pearl paint colors.

The solvent is what provides the transferability, without the solvent the paint would be to thick in viscosity to transfer from container to container.

Now that you know the three basic ingredients, let’s talk about the different paint systems and the applications for each.

Prior to 1985, the majority of the domestic cars had single stage paint from the factory. This was a major problem in trying to match the metallic colors for several reasons. In single stage metallic paints, the paint film is all one layer combined including the gloss resin, pigment, metallic and solvent.

The painter was challenged in painting a single stage metallic system because he only had 4 coats to achieve coverage and layout the metallic in a uniform matter by dusting light coats but still maintain an acceptable gloss.

This challenge was overcome by applying the first and second coat medium wet to achieve coverage and good bond to the surface. The third coat was applied medium wet and immediately followed by a mist coat until the metallic was even. The painter had to move fast and paint panel by panel and jump side to side to keep the overspray melting.

The secrete to this application was to keep the paint film wet, so when you mist the metallic on the wet surface it would flow to the bottom of the paint film and let the gloss resin rise to form the glass look we were looking for.

The same process is used in basecoat colors today except we are not worried about gloss because the urethane clearcoat is applied as the final topcoat and provides the deep gloss we need.

So what affects color match? Now that you know the ingredients and application process of automotive paint, I will explain what happens to color during the application.

Auto paint colors are made up of a combination of pigment colors and metallic sizes including pearls. The first challenge is the factory standard. Today, the average paint code has between three to seven alternates that are worth formulating. There is actually more but the auto paint manufacturers have narrowed them to down to keep the databases simple to use.

So why do the car manufacturers have so many variances? Most car manufacturers have three major paint suppliers. The manufacturer decides on a standard color for production and submits a painted sample to their suppliers. The paint manufacturer then produces a formula for the “standard sample” and is allowed a tolerance of plus or minus 5% when they deliver the paint.

This is the first problem because the plant in the east coast may be getting a 5% shade greener on a blue metallic standard and the plant in the west coast may be getting a 5% shade violet on the same blue metallic standard. When compared side by side, they look like a completely different color. This is the reason the paint manufacturers usually have the standard formula followed by two alternates. If the alternates are not available, the painter in the body shop usually mixes the standard formula and tints it accordingly.

The second reason for variances in paint colors is the metallic color applications. The metallic colors are now classified in 7 categories. Extra fine, fine, medium, medium coarse, coarse, and extra coarse. The metallic colors control the value (lightness and darkness) of the color similar to what white does in a pastel color.

Metallic colors will cause variances in color when applied. Temperature, paint film thickness, flash off time between coats, fluid tip sizes, speed of the spray gun, surface type (Plastic or Metal) and humidity will all cause the color to shift lighter or darker.

The rule of thumb: the longer it takes to dry, the darker the color will change as it dries. This is caused by pigment floatation. The metallic flakes will settle down to the bottom of the paint film and push the pigment up causing the color to shift darker.

The reasons above only mention the variables at the car manufacturers level. So what happens to a color after three years of sunshine? Many people think that colors do not change, but they do, and I will prove it. If you own a car that is at least three years old and has been out in the sun most of the time, remove a pinstripe and you will see the original color when you bought the car.

The sunlight has ultra-violet, and has absorbed some of the pigments. Blue metallic colors sometimes shift to a greener shade, and reds will turn pinkish or more orange. The auto body shop has to deal with matching an oxidized color in addition to new OEM colors. The new paint to be applied will look brighter and cleaner but the rest of the car looks dead even if you polish it.

Auto Body Shops today have a greater challenge than just color match. The texture or (Orange Peel) also has to match the original finish in order for it to look pre-accident condition. This can be accomplished by using the proper spray gun, polishing equipment and experience.

Why do plastic bumper covers change color? Every once in a while we get a phone call from body shop client that is trying to deliver a car and their customer will not take it because the bumper looks different than the car. The most amazing thing is that the bumper and the front end of the car was painted at the same time, with the same gun, same air pressure, same temperature and the same paint.

How do you explain the bumper color change to the customer? Plastic bumpers will always change color especially in metallic colors. The plastic has a static charge and the metallic paint will settle different than on the sheet metal parts, causing pigment floatation that will shift the color darker or lighter. The other reason is surface temperature, if the sheet metal is colder, the bumper will look lighter, if the sheet metal is hotter than the bumper, the color on the bumper will look darker. The third reason is flex additive. If the clearcoat is applied on the bumper with a flex additive, it will shift the color slightly.

How do you prove your point after explaining this to the customer? Your customer will probably think your trying to fool them with this explanation, Luckily, the majority of our body shop clients in our area are dealerships. So they walk the client to the show room floor and point out that just about every car on the lot with a metallic color has a shade different on the bumper covers, front and rear, plastic door handles and plastic mirrors, all have different shades. Most clients are more at ease when they realize that they bought the car this way but had never noticed.

Here are some tips you should consider when spot repairing:

Always blend the color to achieve color match. Do not panel paint and expect a quality color match, even if it looks close enough, blend it! You have too many variables to deal with.

Always tint the value first before tinting the hue. 80% of the time it will hit or it will be bendable. Never try to blend a color that is off on value, it will always look to dark or too light where you spot repaired.

Using the Internet to Find Lower Cost Motorcycle Insurance

In an effort to find better coverage options on motorcycle insurance at a lower cost, many riders are turning to the internet. There is a wide range of services available to compare policies and deliver quotes you’ll need to protect your bike. Finding the best policy still takes a detailed review of the coverage and the cost of any policy.

Find Your Current Policy

Before you start any surfing, find a current copy of your policy so you know what your coverage levels are now as well as deductibles and other costs. This policy will help you do a legitimate comparison to any other offers you receive on the web. Sometimes consumers are anxious to settle for the lowest cost and this may be a mistake. Some of these lower cost policies have very high deductibles or offer very poor protection. Often times, spending a little bit more for a policy can buy you a whole lot more coverage. Having your current policy in front of you will allow you to compare your existing coverage to any new quote to understand if the deal you are being offered is really better. This will also help you decide if making adjustments to things like your deductibles makes sense for the savings they provide.

Use a Comparison Website

Once you have a baseline of what your current policy provides, you can visit one of the many motorcycle insurance websites available. These sites do an incredible job of asking you for a few pieces of information about your bike and your driving habits to deliver a list of policies that may fit your needs. You can quickly compare these various offers to see the different levels of protection and cost they provide. Some sites will show you the average price for the policy and others will require your email address to have the individual companies send you a quote directly. Some consumers aren’t comfortable surrendering their email and worry that they will receive unwanted solicitations. If this is a concern, you can still use the site to get a general feel for the cost of a policy that fits your needs and then contact the individual companies directly that offer the policy you like.

Request a Digital Quote

If you find a company or two with rates that interest you, ask them to send you a quote for the coverage. In years past this would require a trip to an office to assemble the paperwork. In the new digital age, all of this can be done online and you can actually receive your coverage immediately after submitting payment. Even though this may be tempting, take a little time to review the quote these companies send out. You normally have a few days to consider the coverage they are offering and it’s always a good idea to seriously consider an offer before making a decision. This will also give you the time you’ll need to compare it to your current policy in detail and make sure you’re getting the coverage you want.

Talk With Your Agent

One last step before making a decision online is to speak with your current agent about your policy. When you have this conversation, bring the quote you like most with you to see if they can offer you similar coverage at the same price. In most cases they will appreciate you giving them the opportunity to keep your business and will find a way to make the numbers you have been given online work in one of their policies. They would rather offer you whatever discount was needed, than lose you as a customer.

Even if your agent can’t actually meet the pricing of the quote you received over the web, they can help you review it and may point out problems with the policy that you missed. This review can be a great way to make sure you’re getting what you expect and will help you avoid mistakes with a confusing policy. This is especially true if the price you were quoted was substantially lower than your current policy. This type of dramatic price decrease may indicate problems with the policy that only a trained agent can find. You may discover after reviewing these new quotes with your agent that it’s still a better deal for you to pay a little higher premium to have a policy with someone you already know and can trust to protect you.

Go Auto Insurance – Specific Offers for Specific Needs

Bundled insurance coverage for house, health, life, and car often gives cost-saving benefit, but some people simply choose to separate their policies because this can often provide better quality of services, for example with auto insurance. Being an insurance company that specifically offers auto insurance policies, Go Auto Insurance does not even sell coverage for motorcycle, boat, or any other type of vehicle. It specializes in providing coverage for all car drivers in Arkansas. Moreover, it is also different from most companies in this industry because it is a family-oriented company which does not publicly trade their shares. Based on those two characteristics, there are plenty of great benefits for customers, including but not limited to the following:

1. Personalized options

One of the biggest benefits of purchasing auto insurance only without bundling it with other policies is the possibility to personalize more options, for example the quotes and payment. Since Go Auto Insurance only sells coverage policies for cars, customers are able to adjust their options without any additional fees. In most cases, there are always less restricting rules about how you pay, or what types of coverage to purchase, and other limitations commonly found in bundled insurance.

2. Non-commissioned agents

You may find yourself in a situation where an insurance agent is determined to persuade you to purchase the insurance from a particular company. The main reason is that the agent may earn some commissions for every sale they make. Go Auto Insurance does have agents, but they are non-commissioned, meaning you only pay for what you get without additional fee for the services provided by the agents.

3. Focus and simplicity

As mentioned earlier, Go Auto Insurance only offers coverage policies for cars. This mindset allows the company to easily focus on a specific field so that everything is handled properly without involving any complexity of a bundled insurance. More than that, all processes from asking for quotes, making a purchase, to filing a claim are simple for customers. Bundled insurance, in one way or another, tends to lead customers to give less detailed attentions to every policy they have. Go Auto Insurance does not deal with any other type of policy, allowing you and the company to discuss and handle all matters more specifically which often leads to better results for both parties.

Automatic Direct Auto Insurance Quote

Acquiring insurance coverage may not be as easy as you expect, especially if this is your first time. Young drivers, who were previously included in their parents’ policies, need to have their own auto insurance coverage sooner or later. There are some basic requirements such as credit card and saving accounts; many insurers also require applicants to actually have a home. Even when the basic requirements are already fulfilled, young drivers often have to pay quite high premium due to various reasons, for example no home ownership or simply lack of driving experience. Direct General Auto Insurance (or simply referred to as Direct Auto Insurance) has its own method to make the entire processes very easy. To get Direct Auto Insurance quote, applicants do not even need to actually have credit card or saving accounts, meaning young drivers can apply with good chance of approval.

Driving experience is an also an important factor to determine insurance rate. Without enough experience, insurance companies will treat young drivers as “high-risk”, meaning they should purchase non-standard coverage which is always more expensive than its regular counterpart. When acquiring Direct Auto Insurance quote, please remember that you can use the discount as long as you are eligible for it. For young drivers (especially those without occupation or home ownership yet), the “good student” discount is an excellent option to reduce premium by up to 10%.

You can ask for Direct Auto Insurance quote online or at the company’s branch offices spread across 13 states. There are more than 400 branch offices, and you can even acquire quote by phone. Even without credit card or checking account, you can pay the premium bill quite easily, too. In fact, auto direct insurance allows you to choose any specific date in a month to pay the bill, plan your own schedule, installment plans, and even payment methods in including online, offline, and even via phone too.

Young drivers can acquire the quote online and have it delivered to home addresses. In case you are not sure about what type of coverage to purchase, Direct Car Insurance provides you with Virtual Insurance Agents including Coverage Assistant and Life Coach; both are designed to help you to understand what coverage to purchase and make sure that your choices comply with state’s regulation. Those virtual agents will ask some simple “YES or NO” questions and give suggestions based on your answers. Recommendations are given instantly and automatically when you are asking for quotes. However, it is possible to change the company’s recommended coverage plan and simply purchase those that you need the most.

Does Low Cost Auto Insurance Equal Low Liability limits?

The amount of insurance you will need will always be determined to late, once you have an accident. To try to understand how to protect yourself, you first need to know what your liability insurance will cover. It is always broken up in two parts bodily injury and property damage liability.

Bodily injury liability covers injuries do to a car accident.

1. First Aid at the Accident

2. Medical expenses for bodily injury

3. Compensation for loss of income

4. Funeral expenses

5. Legal counsel costs

Property damage liability makes the damage that is cause due to an automobile accident.

1. Structural damage to homes, storefronts, etc.

2. Restauration cost for other immobile objects

3. Car restoration or replacement expenses

So, what coverage limit are right for you? Every state compiles there minimum guidelines individually. 15,000/30,000/15,000 is the minimal norm but that may vary from state to state so check your state guidelines. You might have noticed that there are three coverage figures and not two. This is because bodily injury liability usually comes in a split limit unless you request a single limit of coverage.

Split Limit coverage: Limits are split into two for bodily injury coverage and then there is a separate coverage for property damage. If you take the example from above $15,000/$30,000 coverage, the $15,000 represents the total amount of bodily injury coverage that will be paid out to any one person during an accident. The $30,000 represents the total amount of bodily injury coverage that will be paid out for the entire accident. If you had a single limit of coverage it would include a maximum to be paid out but no individual maximum and it could be divided however needed.

The last number in your liability coverage is always your property damage limit in the above cast is was also $15,000.

What is right amount of liability coverage? The most common amount of coverage is a split limit of $100,000/$300,000 bodily injury with a property damage coverage equal to $50,000. People that take out lower limit are really exposing themselves to financial disaster if they can’t afford to pay the difference when an accident occurs. For example, say you have $15,000/$30,000 bodily injury coverage and $15,000 property damage coverage. You get into an accident that is your fault with two vehicles a five year Honda Accord and two year old Chrysler 300. There are three people in the Honda and one person in the Chrysler. All have minor injury but are brought to the hospital and the person driving the Chrysler stays overnight for observation. Their bills will run over your $30,000 maximum for Bodily injury and the person driving the Chrysler will have individual hospital cost of more than $15,000. What does that mean? Once your coverage is used up you will be responsible for the rest. With hospital cost as expensive as they are that could mean a very costly bill to you. This doesn’t even take into account the amount of property damage that needs to be paid out. Since you hit two cars the damage for both comes out at $19,000. That is another $4,000 out of your pocket. The worst part of the whole thing was you thought you had full coverage and that it didn’t matter what happened. Full coverage only means that you have liability coverage, comprehensive and collision coverage but your limits on liability are the most important. Make sure they are set properly.

100,000/300,000/50,000 is the most common amount of liability coverage within today. The cost to the consumer to go from state minimums to 100,000/300,000/50,000 of even more coverage isn’t that much more expensive. It just makes sense to me to pay a little more now for more coverage. Rather then thousands more later. I was found at fault in an accident and caused, because I didn’t have coverage to pay for all the expenses I caused to to the accident.

Young Drivers, Marijuana and Car Insurance

Marijuana, young drivers and serious car accidents are on a collision course. Fatal crashes involving drivers whose systems showed evidence of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, nearly tripled in 10 years, rising from 4.2 percent in 1999 to 12.2 percent in 2010, according to a study released earlier this year by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. In another four-year study, 43 percent of fatally injured drivers under 24 tested positive for cannabinoids. The percentage was lower for older age groups.

Now that marijuana is legal in Colorado and Washington and widely tolerated elsewhere in the U.S., parents may be on their own collision course with pot: They face steep car insurance hikes and even cancellation if young drivers on their policies are convicted of a DUI stemming from marijuana use. Here’s what parents need to know about drugged driving and the effect it can have on insurance coverage.

Drugged Driving: A Growing Concern
Pot use behind the wheel is a subset of a category that law enforcement and the traffic safety community call drugged driving. Every state has laws addressing it. In many, the laws say if a driver is stopped and authorities can prove the individual drove under the influence of any substance that impairs driving ability, he or she could be convicted of a DUI. Nearly one-third of states feature “per se” laws. These more strict laws say that any amount of a controlled substance found in the driver’s body is evidence of impaired driving.

The hazards of drunken driving are well known. A growing concern among researchers, law enforcement and those in the traffic safety community is the destruction wreaked by individuals driving under the influence of drugs including marijuana, cocaine and prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Conservative estimates put the cost of these accidents at 6,700 deaths and nearly $60 billion in costs each year.

The effects of marijuana use on driving vary from one person to the next. In the words of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “It is difficult to establish a relationship between a person’s THC blood or plasma concentration and performance impairing effects.” Concentrations of the drug are “very dependent on patterns of use as well as dose.”

Insurance Follows the Car
Driving while stoned is a serious matter for teen and twenty-something drivers, who risk death, injury, criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits. In addition to those outcomes, drugged driving also can have financial impacts on parents, who often own and insure the cars their adult children drive.

“Insurance follows the car, not the driver,” says Loretta Worters, vice president of communications for the Insurance Information Institute, a national insurance trade association. A young person’s drugged-driving conviction is likely to be treated like a drunk driving conviction, whether the recreational use of pot is legal in that state, says Bob Passmore, personal lines policy senior director with the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.

“As with any DUI conviction, your insurance company could cancel your policy, ask you to take the individual off the policy, or keep him or her on at a much higher rate, depending on the rules in the state,” Passmore says. “The individual with the conviction might need to get their own policy.” That would come at a much higher rate than if the driver is on his parents’ policy, he says.

Worters agrees. If a young person is convicted of driving under the influence, “insurance rates will jump astronomically, because driving under the influence is illegal,” she says. “DUI convictions can result in multi-year jail terms. You’re also putting the parents’ assets at risk” if there are civil lawsuits in connection with the accident, she warns.

Not every teen uses pot, of course. In 2012, less than 8 percent of youths ages 12-17 had used marijuana in the past month, according to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use & Health. And about 80 percent of teens say they disapprove of their friends using pot. Pot use increases markedly for young adults, however. In 2012, 18.7 percent of 18-to-25-year-olds had used marijuana in the past month.

If your child does use pot, you may need to take a tough stance when it comes to his or her use of your cars.

“Parents may want to consider either taking the car privileges away until they’ve cleaned up their act, or taking them off your insurance policy,” Worters says. An insurance company may not be comfortable with a young driver continuing to be on the policy if they’re “living in the same house, having possible access to the keys, even if they aren’t driving,” she says, “because that risk is always there.”

Talk to Your Insurance Agent
Parents should consider contacting their insurance agent to assess their coverage, preferably before a teen drives under their car insurance policy, experts says. Parents also might want to review their liability limits and consider an umbrella liability policy. This will provide protection in case their child causes a serious injury and is sued.

“You want to make sure you and your child are protected,” Passmore says.

Does Your Credit Score Affect Your Car Insurance Rate?

Does your credit score impact your car insurance rate? It’s a question you might have wondered about before — especially if you have a particularly spotty credit record. Unless you live in California, Hawaii or Massachusetts, the short answer is yes. The explanation of the relationship between credit scores and car insurance rate-setting is more complex, however.

What Factors Into a Car Insurance Rate?
Obviously, your driving record has an impact on the estimated risk your insurance company assumes by taking you on as a driver. There also are other risk elements that affect your car insurance, according to theInsurance Information Institute: where you park your car at night, your gender, your age and the kind of car you drive. Also relevant to your rate, according to insurance companies, is your credit score.

The practice of using credit scores in setting insurance rates has been around for at least 20 years. According to at least two studies, a 2003 study done at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, and a 2007 study by the Federal Trade Commission, there is a statistical correlation between how much a consumer costs an insurance company and that customer’s credit score.

The Texas study looked at a random sample of 175,647 people in the state and found that “the lower a named insured’s credit score, the higher the probability that the insured will incur losses on an automobile insurance policy, and the higher the expected loss on the policy.” The study’s authors noted that they did not attempt to explain why credit scoring added significantly to the insurer’s ability to predict insurance losses.

The FTC study found that credit-based insurance scores are effective predictors of risk under automobile policies. “They are predictive of the number of claims consumers file and the total cost of those claims,” study authors write. “The use of scores is therefore likely to make the price of insurance better match the risk of loss posed by the consumer. Thus, on average, higher-risk consumers will pay higher premiums and lower-risk consumers will pay lower premiums.”

It’s also important to note that insurance companies don’t use traditional credit scores. They build their own scores based on FICO or Experian scores: Basically, companies take your score and use it in their own model.

But Is This Fair?
According to J. Robert Hunter, director of insurance at the Consumer Federation of America, credit scoring was the first classification factor used by insurance companies that was not based on traditional actuarial research. Before this, he says, rate factors were determined by developing a thesis and then testing it by collecting data to determine if it was correct. For example: If the thesis was that drivers with a DUI conviction might have more claims in the following year, actuaries might look at statistical evidence to see if such a thesis was correct.

Hunter said that advocates for the use of credit scores in car insurance rate-setting “still cannot explain what they are measuring, coming up with explanations like, ‘Sloppy with finance means sloppy with driving.’

“Of course, when the 2008 financial crisis hit, many people developed worse credit scores that had nothing to do with their sloppiness,” he said.

“The fact is that credit is a surrogate for prohibited rate classes such as income and race,” Hunter said. “Insurers are prohibited from using these factors in all states and we think this is their way around the prohibition.”

But others argue that insurance is a numbers game and the practice, even if unfair, might be logical. Frankie Kuo, an analyst at ValuePenguin.com, says that insurers are “doing their best to find out whether their future and current policyholders are a good or bad risk to take.”

What You Can Do To Mitigate Your Costs
Regardless of whether the use of credit history is fair, it is legal in all but three states. So what can you do if your credit score is in less than perfect shape? As always, your best bet is to shop around for an insurance company.

“Insurers always differ in how much weight they put on each rating factor, and I guarantee you consumers will always find one that finds their imperfect credit score less of a problem than other insurers do,” Kuo explains.

According to a study by WalletHub, Geico appears to rely the least on credit scores, while Farmers Insurance seems to lean on it the most heavily.

For consumers who have difficulty finding coverage at all, in almost every state there is an assigned risk plan that helps high-risk drivers find coverage for a limited period of time. “Even if the rates may be higher than if they obtain a policy in the voluntary market, they will be avoiding insurance lapse, which not only contributes to higher rates in the future, but also possibly legal consequences,” Kuo explained.

Finally, improve or maintain your credit history by paying your bills on time and not skipping payments. You also should check your credit report and keep an eye out for possible errors. Consider free credit monitoring with a company like CreditKarma and free annual credit-history reports from AnnualCreditReport.com.

How To Cut Teen Insurance Rates

Teens ages 16-19 are three times more likely than drivers older than 20 to be involved in a fatal crash (or any crash, for that matter) according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It’s not too surprising, then, that teen drivers tend to have high insurance premiums. For parents, this can mean a big jump in insurance premiums once you add your teen driver to your policy. However, there are ways to reduce your costs right out of the gate, even for very inexperienced drivers. Here are some ways to keep policy costs at a minimum.

Choose the Right Car
It’s simply a matter of economics. There are some cars that cost more to repair and replace than others. There are also some cars that are more likely to be stolen and others that protect passengers better in a crash. Combined, these three characteristics have a lot to do with how much you’ll pay for the collision and theft portions of your policy, says David Goldstein, the author of Insure Your Car for Less: A Practical Guide to Saving Money on Automobile Insurance.

There are several ways to choose the least expensive car to drive. First, check the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick awards and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 5-Star Safety Ratings to see which cars scored the best in crashworthiness. You’ll also want to check the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s list of Hot Wheels: cars that are most commonly stolen.

Your insurance broker or company can also help you find the best rate for the cars you’re considering, says Goldstein, who has worked as an insurance and claims adjuster. “If you’re considering several cars, call and ask for a rate quote on each,” he suggests.

Midsize family cars are generally the cheapest to insure, says Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president and chief communications officer at the Insurance Information Institute, a nonprofit information service. “You want a car that’s easy to drive and highly protective. Those are the cars that are going to keep your teen safe and cost the least to insure,” she says.

You may also want to consider a car that doesn’t need collision insurance, which will cut your rates considerably, says Salvatore, and either way, the age of your car may lead to more discounts.

“Some companies offer a utility discount for cars older than a 2002 model year,” she says. That said, make sure any older car you purchase has a solid crash rating and all of the safety features that a newer car might have including airbags, an antilock braking system (ABS), daytime running lights and (for SUVs) electronic stability control.

Adjust Driver Assignments
When you call the insurance company to add your child to a policy, the representative will ask you to designate which car will be driven by each member of your family most often.

You can save money by designating and having your child drive the car that’s the least expensive to insure. The trick is finding out which car that is, says Goldstein. “Driver assignment can really affect your rates,” he agrees.

If you get someone on the phone who is willing to work with you, he or she can take you through all the different scenarios. “Occasionally, I’d quote rates for four people and four different cars: two parents and two kids. If we played around with it, we could often save money,” Goldstein says.

Look for Alumni Discounts or Resident-Student Discounts
One of the perks of going to college is that many schools ink alumni deals with large organizations, such as insurance companies. While the discount is usually around 5 or 10 percent, it’s still worth looking into. Geico, for instance, offers an 8 percent discount for DePaul University students and alumni. Liberty Mutual offers special rates to those who attend Arizona State University.

If your child goes away to college and doesn’t take a car along, you can save a lot on your premium. Allstate, for example, offers a 35 percent discount off premiums for students who live at a school that is more than 100 miles from where their car is garaged. “There’s an assumption that they are only going to be driving on weekends and school vacations,” says Salvatore.

Finally, all full-time high school and college students who get good grades can benefit from their diligence. Most companies offer up to 25 percent discounts for good report cards. You’ll also see rates drop as your child advances in school. Seniors in college have better rates than freshman, so if your child takes college credits over the summer or in high school, let your insurance company know when he or she reaches the next college milestone, says Goldstein.

Wait an Extra Year Before Licensing
Some teens may not like this idea, but you can save a lot of money simply by having your son or daughter wait an extra year to get a driving permit.

“Wait until they are as old as possible before they get their permit,” says Goldstein. “For instance, in some states you can get your learner’s permit as early as 16 but you’re probably not going to be driving [without restrictions] until you’re 18. Why pay for insurance those two years unless you have to?”

Delaying the process is more common than you may think, according to several recent studies. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that just 44 percent of teens get their licenses within 12 months of the minimum age and only 54 percent get their licenses before they turn 18.

However, if you go this route, make sure teens know that they’ll still need the practice and supervision that a graduated driver licensing program affords.

Tracking for Discounts and Better Driving Habits
In recent years new devices that connect to a car’s computer and use GPS technology to track driving habits and routes have flooded the market. While they can be very useful for parents who want to make sure that their teen isn’t speeding or driving outside an approved area, they’re also being used by insurance companies to help set rates for drivers of all ages in an approach called use-based insurance.

Snapshot, a program by Progressive Insurance, is one such option that uses a pocket-size telematics device that transmits car data using cell-phone technology. The device plugs into a car’s onboard diagnostic port and measures driving habits such as how and when someone drives, tracking behaviors like mileage, time of day and if the person performs hard braking maneuvers.

“Our Snapshot program gives all consumers, including teens, more control over their car insurance costs by offering personalized discounts based on their actual driving behavior,” explains Jeff Sibel, a spokesman for Progressive Insurance. “People who drive less, in safer ways and during safer times of day are most likely to receive a discount.”

Some companies are offering the device for parental tracking, but without an immediate insurance discount. Its use could result in lower rates going forward, says Rebecca Hirsch, a spokeswoman for insurer USAA. “We’re offering the device for free and parents get the monitoring for a year free,” she says. “Parents can get text messages if their teens are doing things like hard braking. It enables the parent and the teen to have a conversation around safe driving habits. The first few years are so critical. Anecdotally, we’ve seen that the devices help build better driving behaviors.”

Take a Class
Adults and teens alike can save money by taking a six-hour driving safety course either online or in person. Some insurance companies are offering teen-specific courses that can help reduce the number of crashes that involve teens by providing realistic driving simulations.

Liberty Mutual, for example, offers something it calls teenSMART, a program that focuses on the six factors that most commonly cause teen car accidents. The company says teens who complete the program may get “special savings” on their auto policies, but doesn’t offer any examples of what those savings might be.

State Farm offers a program called Steer Clear for drivers under the age of 25 or new drivers with less than three years of driving experience. It requires drivers to watch a video, sign a safe driving parent/driver agreement and complete a certain number of supervised trips of 15-30 minutes over the course of a month, filling out a log after each trip. By completing the program, drivers can get a discount of up to 15 percent on their coverage, says State Farm spokeswoman Rachael Risinger.

Finally, driver-training classes — so-called driver’s ed — can also help lower your premiums by up to 10 percent, depending on your insurer.

Make Smart Choices
Even if they apply every discount imaginable, most people will find there’s no getting around the fact that rates will go up with a teen driver on the policy — at least for a little while. And while it might be tempting to simply “forget” to inform your insurance company that Junior has his license, take note: Doing so can have serious consequences if your child is in an accident.

You’ll also want to make sure you have enough insurance coverage. “Don’t go for the minimum limits,” suggests Burl Daniel, a former insurance agent and corporate risk manager who testifies as an expert witness in insurance cases. “You’re exposing yourself to potential problems, if your kid does have a wreck and seriously injures someone. Don’t take the bait now just to save a few hundred dollars when it could end up costing you a lot down the road.”

Should You Get Credit Insurance When You Buy a Car?

For most of us, buying a car is the second largest financial transaction we’ll make, next to buying a home. And we’re likely to get loans to finance our car purchase. In the fourth quarter of 2014, 84 percent of new cars purchased were financed, according to Experian Automotive.

If you’re financing your car purchase through a dealership, it’s also likely that the finance and insurance manager will offer you warranty and insurance products, such as an extended warranty, gap insurance or tire-and-wheel protection. The F&I manager might also offer credit protection, which is meant to cover your car payments should you be unable to pay them yourself because of layoff, injury, illness or death.

The most venerable of these products, with an almost 100-year history, is credit insurance. Consumer groups have long been leery of credit insurance products, which are offered not just for cars, but also for credit cards and other consumer loans. Often, the consumer groups contend, the products are expensive and unnecessary. Further, there have been instances of lenders forcing the credit insurance on consumers.

“It’s often very expensive when you compare it to the benefits,” says Chris Kukla, senior vice president with the Center for Responsible Lending, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization focusing on consumer lending, based in Durham, North Carolina. Further, he says, the credit insurance policies are “riddled with exclusions.”

Payout rates (the premium dollars paid compared with the amount paid out in claims) are typically low. That’s because the money is going to commissions, he says.

There are some decent providers of credit insurance, such as credit unions, Kukla says, but it’s tough for consumers to know which products are worthwhile and which ones are rip-offs. To protect themselves, potential buyers should look for coverage they can afford that specifically addresses their financial concerns and which comes from a reputable insurer. The insurance department in your state is the place to check in order to see that the company is licensed and legitimate, says automotive expert Lauren Fix.

The three most common types of credit insurance coverage are:

Credit life: This pays off all or some of your loan if you die during the time you’re covered.
Credit disability: Pays on the loan if you become ill or injured and can’t work during the time you’re covered. It’s also sometimes called credit accident and health insurance.
Credit involuntary unemployment: Pays a specified number of monthly loan payments if you lose your job through no fault of your own, such as in a layoff, during the coverage term. It’s also known as “involuntary loss of income” insurance.

None of these coverages is required with a car loan. You can’t be denied credit if you say no to a credit insurance offer, Kukla says.

Payment Protection: A Newer Product
A more recent type of credit protection is called debt protection, which might also go by such names as debt cancellation, debt suspension or payment protection. Federal law allows national banks, most state-chartered banks and credit unions to offer this benefit without involving an insurer. The bank or credit union fills that role.

Debt protection provides benefits that are similar to credit insurance. It’s typically offered when you sign your loan papers.

A New Approach: The Walkaway Program
The Great Recession of 2007-’09 had a devastating impact on consumers and brought car purchasing to a near standstill. Who could feel comfortable buying a new car if there was a good chance you’d lose your job tomorrow? The recession has had “a major impact on the psyche of the car buying public,” says Steve Klees, senior vice president at EFG Companies in Irving, Texas.

In the midst of the recession, EFG partnered with Hyundai to offer the Hyundai Assurance program, introduced to consumers during the 2009 Super Bowl. It offered people the peace of mind to buy that new car. If you lost your job within a year of buying your new Hyundai, the automaker promised, it would take the car back. By the time that program ended in 2011, 350 people had returned their vehicles.

While Hyundai Assurance is gone, EFG makes available a similar product, called Walkaway, which is available through 350-400 dealerships, banks and credit unions across the country. When an involuntary job loss or other triggering event happens, the program releases customers from a car lease or loan obligation. Typically, the dealership, credit union or bank pays for the first year of coverage. After that, customers have the option of purchasing the coverage package for $395. There are no underwriting guidelines or restrictions except that the purchase price of the vehicle must be less than $75,000. “That’s probably 99.9 percent of all cars,” Klees says.

Klees says the “sweet spot” for Walkaway is with customers ages 25-40 — not surprising given that this group is least secure in their job situation, compared with other groups. Klees, a 35-year veteran of selling credit insurance and other add-on products, says purchasers of traditional credit insurance tend to be older.

What To Ask Yourself and the Lender
The popularity of debt protection products has been on the wane over the decades. In a long-term study for the Federal Reserve, the percent of people who said they purchased debt protection coverage in 1977 was 63.9 percent. In 2012, that dropped to 22.7 percent.

If you are interested in a debt protection product, the Center for Responsible Lending suggests that you purchase the products through a credit union or bank, where the rates may be lower. Compare any dealership price quote and terms to ensure you’re getting the best deal for comparable coverage. Also, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners advises you to ask these questions before you buy:

  • What’s the premium? Will it be financed as part of the loan? And will that increase your loan amount so you’ll have to pay additional interest?
  • Can you pay the premium monthly instead of financing the entire premium as part of your loan?
  • What’s the loan payment minus the credit insurance?
  • Will the insurance cover the loan’s full length and amount?
  • What are the limits and exclusions on payment of benefits?
  • Is there a waiting period before the coverage becomes effective? If so, how long?
  • With a co-borrower, what coverage does he or she have? What’s the cost for that coverage?
  • Can you cancel the policy? What kind of refund is available? Are there any penalties?

It’s also wise to see if you have other insurance that might eliminate the need for a credit insurance contract in association with your car purchase. A term life insurance policy would provide benefits in the event of your death. Your employer may make disability coverage available. Check with your insurance agent to see what your current coverage would provide before you buy credit protection.

If at any point you feel pressured to buy credit insurance, it’s best to simply walk away and consider your options in a pressure-free environment. In the words of the National Automobile Dealers Association, “once you sign the contract, you are legally obligated.”

Honda Access Takes Car Accessory Customization into the Fast Lane with Stratasys 3D Printed Prototypes

What do you need from your set of wheels? Is it a functional workhorse, or does it have to reflect your personality? More and more, car owners’ accessories and style choices set their vehicles apart. An entire industry exists to support automobile customization, and Stratasys 3D printing is playing an increasing role in developing and prototyping the official accessories for one of the world’s most well-known brands.

More Than 200 Ways to Express Your Personality

What gets customized? Wheels, mirrors, knobs, parts of the trunk and more. Customers choose these add-ons in order to make their cars reflect their wants and personalities. Takemori gave the example of the popular CR-V sports utility vehicle: “In the United States, the vehicle is marketed to parents who use the vehicle to pick up and drop off their children, but in China it is positioned as the ultimate SUV and a status symbol. Since the vehicle body is built to the same standards worldwide, we use the accessories to give the car a little regional flavor.”Honda Access Company Ltd. creates and sells custom add-on parts for Honda vehicles worldwide from its headquarters in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Each vehicle model has up to 300 accessories that can be added to match the customer’s desires and practical demands per region. “We have to take into account a range of considerations, such as regional driver preferences and climate and road surface conditions when designing the accessories, offering distinct specifications according to a country’s needs and demand,” explained Hiroshi Takemori, a senior researcher from Honda Access’ product planning department.

Honda Access Moving Faster with Stratasys 3D Printed Prototypes

Stratasys 3D printing allows for accurate fit and functional testing, like ensuring that this prototyped wheel and spoke match the available space.

Designers at Honda Access have been using 3D printing as part of their product development since 2006; the internal demand eventually led the company to purchase anObjet Eden500V for daily use. 3D printing aids at several critical points in the design process, including prototyping and testing for fit and function. The most popular Stratasys PolyJet 3D printing materials used in-house at Honda Access are from the Vero line of rigid opaque materials, which are painted with a clear coat for a close to final product finish.

Prototyping with 3D printing allows the designers to make modifications to the product designs on the fly. Keeping the entire process in-house has allowed the Honda Access team to tighten their design schedule and eliminate delays due to outsourcing or relying on slower CNC milling methods.

Takemori elaborated on the advantages of using 3D printing as part of the product design cycle: “3D printers allow us to synchronize the development schedule with that of the vehicle itself and create the accessory parts simultaneously, improving both the quality and speed of the prototype process. The technology has become indispensable for our business.”

Can car accessories improve the value of your car?

The cost of after market car accessories, such as sound systems, wheels, and rims, can increase a person’s transportation expense by thousands of dollars a year. Because of this, many consumers are surprised when they go to sell their cars and discover that these accessories actually add very little to the value of their vehicle. In fact, in many cases these accessories can actually detract from the value of a car.

The after market accessories industry grosses millions of dollars a year selling items such as enhanced sound systems and upgraded rims. Some of these items cost thousands of dollars, and many people save for months or years to buy these accessories. For example, many sound systems have several parts that include multiple speakers, disc changers, and faceplates. The price range of this product is huge; sound systems can cost just under a hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. In addition, professional installation of a sound system can cost several hundred dollars.

Because of this, many consumers are shocked when they go to sell their car or truck and find out that the sound system they paid so much for has added very little to the value of their car. There are several reasons for this.

To start, having after-market accessories such as a new sound system or rims can, in many cases, make the warranty on the car invalid. Cars and trucks without warranties typically sell for about $500 less than similar makes and models with warranties. Furthermore, installing after-market parts is a major indicator to a potential buyer that there has been work done on a car that might effect how the car functions. Rims and wheels that have been improperly installed, for example, can end up costing a potential buyer hundreds of dollars in repairs to alignment systems.

This potential for future problems turns off many buyers from buying a car with after market accessories. Since many after market installation kits have to be modified to fit right into most cars, there is the potential for a lot of damage that may not show up for years.

Furthermore, after market parts are believed to be an indication of a younger, less responsible driver by many potential car buyers. Correct or not, to many buyers, this is believed to be an indication that the car was well-used, run hard, and/or less well maintained than other vehicles. If the parts have been incorrectly and/or unprofessionally installed, this is believed to indicate that other parts in the car have not been professionally maintained.

Even if the after-market parts have been installed professionally, the odds are low that they will return the same amount that a car owner paid for them when it becomes time to sell. Buyers who would really appreciate a particular after market part will typically want to customize a vehicle to their own tastes. This means they will not be willing to pay full price for the part.

Essential Car Accessories

One of the many options consumers need to think about when buying a new car are the accessories to purchase.  At one time, air conditioning was viewed as a luxury feature to have in a car.  Today, nearly all new cars come with air conditioning installed as standard equipment.

Choosing Car Accessories

In this article, we will be talking in generalities; there will be exceptions to these rules given the wide variety of makes and models in the marketplace.  For example, if a car happens to have air conditioning listed as an option, buyers would be well advised to buy it if living in one of the warmer parts of the country.

This same argument applies to standard shifts or manual transmissions; cars without automatic transmissions.  When buying a minivan, this accessory will add value to the vehicle when it’s eventually sold.  But if the vehicle is a road-eating sports car, the standard shift might be far more desirable. When the car is eventually sold, it will be difficult to find a buyer that is willing to drive a vehicle without air conditioning if the outside temperatures hit 90 degrees.  Air conditioning is something that most people need, especially if older relatives might be transported from time to time.

It’s important to identify car accessories that are valued by anyone interested in buying a used car.  That means saving a little bit of money when buying a new car might limit the number of potential buyers later on.  For that very reason, saving money in the short term could be a costly mistake in the long term.

Valued Options

This last point is worth repeating.  Consumers should purchase options that not only make driving the car more enjoyable, but also hold their value when it’s sold.  That means taking into consideration accessories that other buyers will value, since they’d be willing to pay a premium for those options.

According to used car experts such as Kelley Blue Book, the options that tend to hold their value best include items such as moon roofs, T-tops, leather seating, and premium wheels.  This last category includes aluminum wheels, and more exotic steel or even chromium wheels.

If offered, sports packages tend to hold their value very well.  This may include a rear spoiler or a sports-tuned suspension.  Other valuable options include power door locks and power seating.  Upgrades to the engine, in terms of more horsepower, tend to add value to sports cars and trucks, but do not add value to most cars or minivans.

Custom Cars

When taken to the extreme, however, some options can actually detract from the value of the car.  For example, a custom paint job is really tailoring a car to an individual’s tastes.  In this case, the car becomes very “personal.”  Keep in mind that a lot of buyers may not appreciate a car with orange flames on the hood, they might even detract from its value; thereby lowering its resale price.

Convenience versus Value

Convenience items may make the car a little more enjoyable to operate, but they add little or no value to the selling price of a used car.  Once again, the experts tell us this includes power windows, remote keyless entry systems, premium alarm systems, and auxiliary lights.

The more common accessories, such as a rear defogger or tilt steering wheel, tend to be treated as standard equipment, and nearly all cars are expected to have them installed.  For this reason, they also tend to add little to the value of the car.

Optional stereo equipment is by far one of the more popular choices in new vehicles.  Unfortunately, they tend to be ignored when reselling the car.  Once again, if someone sets out to build the ultimate car stereo, they are customizing the car, and that can detract from its value.

Safety

It’s one thing to worry about the features that will add value to the car; it’s another to worry about its passengers.  It is impossible to place a value on the personal safety of others.  The advice here is to purchase as many car safety features as possible.  This includes front air bags, side air bags, anti-lock brakes, all wheel drive; whatever is offered by the manufacturer.

Automobile insurance companies will even reward policyholders for buying these options.  Nearly all companies offer discounts on insurance premiums when safety accessories are installed in a vehicle.

Popular Colors

The color of a car is certainly not an accessory, but it is worth a mention in this article.  There are certain colors that never seem to go out of style:  white, black, dark gray, silver, and reds.  Be careful of colors that might be trendy, because they may be out of style when the car is eventually sold.  For example, that purple sports car might look great the day it was driven off the dealer’s parking lot; but in four to six years from now, it might not be easy to sell a used purple car.

How to fit car accessories in your budget

If you drive to your workplace, chances are you spend a lot of time in your car everyday. Thanks to poor infrastructure, most office commutes in cities like Mumbai stretch to as much as two to three hours every day.

Since you spend so much time in it, the look and feel of the car, interiors, the music system you choose among other things become so important for you. Car accessories could change the look and feel of your car and give you a pleasant driving experience.

The cost of any car accessory could vary depending on the brand and quality. Most accessories are fitted at the time of taking the delivery. Hence it is necessary you decide which accessories you need, and budget for it accordingly. “Automatic locks increase safety while parking sensors reduce risks of accidents.

Seat covers, alloy wheels and floor mats enhance the look and feel of a car, while a music system relaxes you while driving. Accessories are available in different qualities and prices, and you can buy them according on your budget,” says Rakesh Sidana, founder, mericar.com

Automatic locks and parking sensors

In manual locking systems you have to lock each and every window. If you forget to lock one of them it could be dangerous and may lead to theft.

Hence an automatic lock increases the safety of your car; as you can lock your car at one go. The entire auto locking system could cost you anywhere upwards of Rs 5,000. In cities where there is a constant shortage of parking space, parking sensors are a great utility.

Parking sensors are proximity sensors which alert the driver about obstacles during parking. Sensors are usually fitted to the rear of a vehicle. “While parking in the reverse, especially in small spaces, there are high chances of hitting another vehicle or scratching against the walls/gates, causing dents in the vehicle or damage to another parked vehicle. Hence, this accessory is a must nowadays,” says Arun Sinha, an independent auto expert.

Parking sensors could cost you as much as Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000.

Music system

Listening to your favourite music while driving is known to relax your mind and reduce stress associated with driving. Choosing a music system is again very much a personal choice. You can get a branded music system starting from Rs 3,000 upwards. Depending on the quality of speakers and amplifier, and additional features the cost could go up significantly.

Improving the look and feel inside

Seat covers and floor mats enhance the look and feel of your car. Seat covers can add comfort, protect the seats against fading and wear, and cover any existing damage on the seat. When a car is used regularly, dust, dirt and sweat make the seats dirty. This can be avoided by using seat covers.

“Hence having the right kind of seat covers will enhance the comfort of your car and make its interiors look good. Buy seat covers that match with the car interiors,” says Banwari Lal Sharma, AVP (marketing), Carwale.com.

Seat covers are available in fabric, synthetic and leather varieties. Synthetic seat covers are not porous, so no air passes through it and hence in summers you may tend to sweat a lot. Depending on the quality and the kind of car model, a seat cover could cost you anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 30,000.

Floor mats are another accessory that prevents water from reaching the carpet of the car. You could get floor mats that are transparent or simple rubber mats that are very basic. They could cost you upwards of Rs 2,000, depending on the one you choose.

Enhancing the outer look

While some top-end car models do come with factory fitted alloy wheels, in smaller cars, it is something which you may have to fit yourself if you are keen on it. “Since alloy wheels are light, it helps in reducing the overall car weight that leads to higher fuel efficiency,” says Arun Sinha.

Alloy wheels are good heat conductors and therefore help in reducing excessive heat generation avoiding any pressure on the brakes. Due to effective heat conduction, the chances of a break failure in your vehicle are reduced.

This also helps in reducing the pressure on the car engine. Alloy wheels are costly and could cost you about Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000.

Finally many car dealers recommend a Teflon coating on your car body, which removes small scratches and improves the shine of the car. This could cost you about Rs 3000 to Rs 4,000.

Don’t go overboard on your spend

Auto experts recommend one to be judicious while spending on accessories. “Remember that you will not get much in terms of resale value for your accessories as they are very much a personal choice and the next buyer may not be ready to pay for them, since he may have a different taste,” says Banwari Lal Sharma.

So if you change cars regularly every 3-5 years, remember this is an additional cost you have to bear. Hence keep the financial implications in mind while buying your car accessories.

Make your Car Transportation Easy

In this industry, there are two kind of companies: brokers and carriers. TRANSPORTER TIPS: GETTING YOUR CLASSIC TO HIGHER GROUND

If your classic car has suffered weather- or flood-related damage that’s made extensive repair necessary, or if you need to move it to higher ground to avoid such damage, you may have recently found yourself in need of vehicle transportation for your classic. Choosing a competent carrier and being prepared go a long way toward reducing the stress and worry that go with sending your vehicle off with a stranger.

It’s easy to find auto-transport companies online or in publications like Hemmings Motor News and Sports Car Market, but how do you choose a trustworthy company? Ask around. Major auction companies, museums, restorers, local car club members and other collectors are all good sources for recommendations.  It is essential to use a company experienced with collector vehicles so that they use nylon straps or wheel nets to prevent damage to the chassis and are careful about low ground clearance or very tall cars that might not clear the trailer roof or upper deck.

Never base your decision solely on price. Most reputable carriers have similar cost structures and, with few exceptions, an unusually low price is a bad sign. The easiest way to size up a transport company is to ask how long they’ve been hauling cars. You can also visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website at safersys.org to look up a company’s safety record and insurance status.

You’ll need to decide whether you want your car to travel in an open or enclosed trailer. Open transport is less expensive, but unless you’re hauling a car in need of restoration, you’re better off going with closed transport since the risk of damage to your classic is much lower. And keep in mind, most open trailers aren’t equipped with a winch for non-running vehicles, and carriers sometimes charger exorbitant fees to load inoperable cars. No matter which carrier and option you choose, it’s important to understand and agree on all fees up front.

When it comes to insurance, a carrier is liable only for its own acts of negligence and is not responsible for unforeseeable acts of nature. That’s why it’s important to makes sure your car is covered with agreed value coverage from a company that specializes in collector car insurance before transporting it.

Keep in mind that auto transport is not a regularly scheduled service like airplane or train travel. When you place your transport order, the dispatcher must assemble a load of up to six cars, including your vehicle, and route a truck. Depending on your location and time of year, this may take anywhere from several days to several weeks. The minute you hear of an impending storm, start calling from a list of carriers you have ready in advance. In such cases, it might be best to work with a smaller local transporter who might be more able to fit you in on short notice.

Once you’ve booked transportation for your classic, you’ll need to prepare it for pickup. One of the best things you can do is make sure the car is clean, so it’s easier for you and the carrier to do a proper inspection. This helps avoid damage claim problems.

You’ll also want to provide written instructions regarding anything the person handling your vehicle will need to know, including information about battery and fuel cut-off switches, hidden switches, alarm instructions and any other “tricks” to starting and running your car. It’s recommended that you only have your tank half full and charge batteries to avoid additional fees for winching. Don’t leave loose articles in the vehicle or trunk, which can be damaged or cause damage to your car, and be sure your antifreeze level is adequate for the climate at both ends of the trip to avoid a cracked engine block.

When your car is picked up, the driver will inspect it and note any pre-existing damage. Upon delivery, you or a trusted representative will want to perform a similar inspection. Before signing off on the delivery, make sure to note any damage in case you need to submit a claim.
